A Note About the Rocky Horror Picture Show
It is important to note that The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a product of its time – the 1970’s.
Thus, there is language and verbiage used in the Rocky Horror Picture Show that is no longer acceptable today. But please remember/understand that there weren’t many terms around that time period to describe a lot of what was happening, and people’s identities. We have evolved since then, but the movie still stands as an important piece of social commentary and cultural history.
Rocky Etiquette
“Etiquette?” you cry – at a show with the principle of “Don’t Dream It, Be It?”
Yep, there still is a few things to bear in mind when you are partaking of the Rocky Horror Picture Show experience. The idea of Rocky Horror Participation is to have fun, not disrupt the showing of the film. The following guidelines will help you and the other members of the audience to enjoy the show to the maximum pleasure level.
As stated in the PROPS Section below: Rice, large water guns, food, confetti or any props other than what is provided in the Official RISE Prop Bags are NOT ALLOWED inside Universal Preservation Hall.
Photographs
Whilst taking pictures of yourself and others in costume is allowed in the lobby area – we even have two photo booths set up for you – you should never take images of the movie itself.
Audience Participation
Fans have been dressing up, shouting back lines and singing along to the show and movie for thirty years now. Audience Participation should always be complementary to the show, never disruptive to the overall experience. Call-back lines should be used to add to the Rocky experience, don’t try to shout down other people, they might know some better lines, the best lines are the unexpected, especially if the audience starts to giggle!
PROPS
Participation Kits complete with many items you’ll need are included in the ticket price. OUTSIDE PROPS (ESPECIALLY FOOD ITEMS) WILL NOT BE PERMITTED. Oh, and remember babies, Rocky etiquette says to throw your props up and back – NEVER at the screen (we’d like to be invited back next year, right??)!

Let’s Do the Time Warp Again!
Although not compulsory, you may find that during the Time Warp you are the only person in the audience not on your feet, so take a moment to Learn the Time Warp!
The Influence of the Rocky Horror Picture Show on the Queer Movement
With the Stonewall Riots taking place in 1969, the 1970’s were a coming of age for the civil rights movement of the LGBTQIA+ community. The LGBTQIA+ Community and sexual liberation flourished in the ’70s, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show delves into topics that were considered taboo, like self-discovery and self-actualization.
By openly displaying sex, sexual humor, and LGBTQIA+ representation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show sent a surge of liberation through the 1970s that continues to reverberate, inspiring LGBTQIA+ people to this day. The film is a celebration of the gay community, The Rocky Horror Picture Show not only supported LGBTQIA+ individuals who were closeted or harassed, it made people question their identity, orientation, and lifestyles when they never had before.

Why the Rocky Horror Picture Show?
The Rocky Horror Picture Show – which premiered some 46 years ago – is the longest-running theatrical release in film history. The film has a large international cult following and has been considered by many as one of the greatest musical films of all time. In 2005, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The film is most often shown close to Halloween – and is sure to become a Saratoga Halloween staple!
RISE chose RHPS as the center of our new signature fundraising event because of the positive impact it had (and continues to have) on individuals who have been made to feel alien, outside, or even outcast from society. While there is language used in RHPS that is no longer acceptable today, RHPS embodies RISE’s core value of accepting the inherent value and uniqueness of each individual we serve.
