Board Member Profile: Patrick Shafer

Patrick Shafer has proudly served on the RISE Board of Directors for eight years. He joined the board alongside several long-standing members and has had the opportunity to witness firsthand the tremendous growth of the agency over nearly a decade.

Patrick was introduced to RISE through former board member Billy Taft. At the time, he was becoming more involved in the Saratoga community, and after meeting with leadership, the opportunity felt like a natural fit. Since then, his commitment to RISE’s mission has remained strong.

Throughout his tenure, Patrick has served primarily on the Finance Committee and held the role of Treasurer for three years. Today, he contributes his expertise as a member of the Building and Grounds Committee. With a professional background in banking and credit unions dating back to 2007, Patrick brings valuable financial insight and strategic perspective to the board.

Currently, Patrick works as a Lending Optimization Consultant, where he partners with credit unions across New York State. His work focuses on lending strategy and helping protect individuals and families from unexpected financial hardships. While his professional role differs from RISE’s direct services, the underlying mission aligns closely. He ensures people have structure, protection, and support during life’s most challenging moments.

Patrick is deeply connected to RISE’s mission of strengthening the community. He believes the agency plays a vital role in keeping some of the most vulnerable residents of the Saratoga community safe. He is particularly inspired by the structure and direction RISE provides to individuals navigating mental health and addiction challenges. “When someone is in the weeds of something difficult,” he states, “having structure and guidance can make all the difference.”

As a board member, Patrick values diverse perspectives and thoughtful dialogue. He sees part of his role as constructively challenging ideas, offering a financial lens, and ensuring decisions are made strategically and sustainably. He believes a strong board is one made up of varied backgrounds and viewpoints working together toward a shared mission.

Outside of RISE, Patrick enjoys an active and adventurous life with his wife and their six-year-old son. The family spends much of their time outdoors, frequently traveling in their camper van and exploring the Adirondacks. They also enjoy visiting Sarasota, Florida, where Patrick’s mother lives. A Saratoga local at heart, Patrick is a big fan of the Saratoga Race Course and the area’s vibrant food scene, often exploring new restaurants around town.

Patrick remains committed to supporting both the residents RISE serves and the dedicated staff who carry out the agency’s work every day. His steady leadership, financial expertise, and passion for community continue to make a meaningful impact.
