Myths Hurt – Facts Help

Saratoga-North Country Continuum of Care has launched a campaign to replace misinformation about homelessness with truth, compassion, and data-driven solutions.

Myth One – Homelessness is a Choice

We often hear “Homelessness is a choice” but the reality is today’s wages do not meet the basic needs of many in our area. Creating housing vulnerability and contributing to area homelessness.

Myth Two – Addiction Causes Homelessness

Addiction is rarely the root cause of homelessness — it’s more often a symptom of deeper systemic failures.

The annual point-in-time count even relies on individuals to self-report any substance use connected to their experience of homelessness, which can limit accuracy. Overall, economic instability and the lack of affordable housing are far more significant drivers of homelessness than substance use.

Housing heals. Support saves. Judgment hurts. Let’s change the story.

Myth Three – Homelessness Increases Crime in a Community

Rising criminalization of homelessness is driving an increase of hate crimes against these individuals.

People experiencing homelessness are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. Compassion and solutions, not stigma, make communities safer.
